The Magic of the Chow Chow, now available in grey

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a new admirer of the Puffy Lion Dog, or Teddy Bear dog there is no denying that Chow Chows are one of the most majestic and cute face breeds in the world. With their ancient history, cat-like independence, and that iconic blue-black=purple tongue, they aren’t just pets—they are a lifestyle.

The Magic of the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is one of the world’s few ancient “basal” breeds, meaning their lineage predates most modern dogs. Originally from China, where they were known as Songshi Quan, they’ve played every role from palace guards to hunting companions.

What makes them so special?

  • The Look: That incredible lion’s mane and stilted, “teddy bear” walk.
  • The Personality: They are famously independent and fiercely loyal to their “person.”
  • The Colors: While red and black are classics, there is something truly ethereal about the Blue (Grey) and also about the cream variety.

Why I’m Obsessed with Greys Right Now

If you’ve been following my work, you know I live and breathe Chow Chows. But lately, I have a clear favourite: the Greys.

Technically known as “Blue” in the breed standard, these pups have a stunning, smoky velvet coat that ranges from deep slate to a soft, misty silver. There’s a refined, modern elegance to the grey coat that perfectly complements the Chow’s dignified expression. Whether I’m sketching them or designing new pieces, the grey palette is where my heart is at the moment.
